Martin and Bates slipped easily into the courtyard, climbed over the ivy-covered wall and into the small garden that led to the side entrance of the Georgian style townhouse. With little trouble, they unlatched the door and entered silently into a dark corridor. The servants’ quarters at the rear of the house were far enough away from the upper bedrooms to create little concern. Groping their way in the darkness, they reached the staircase and climbed to the upper level with the deft expertise of experienced criminals and moved cautiously towards one of the front bedrooms.

Neither of the men knew if they would find Marielle or Alaina, only that it belonged to one of the young ladies.

Martin signaled to Bates to stay outside the door and keep watch. He turned the handle, slowly opening the door that led into Alaina’s bedroom. Just enough moonlight streamed through the window for him to see the shape of a woman asleep beneath the coverlet.

Seeing the soft, dark curls spread on the pillow, he knew immediately that it was Alaina, not Marielle and he found himself close enough for the scent of lavender to fill his nostrils.

It reminded him of their last meeting.

Watching her sleep, he could see her tear-stained face and wondered what had caused her such sadness. Even with her face reflecting anguish as she slept, his body naturally responded to her beauty and the curves of her figure molded beneath the covers.

The thought of leaning down and kissing her full lips, still swollen from crying, flitted through his mind only to be immediately snuffed out by the larger purpose of his mission. There was no time to search other bedrooms to find Marielle. York was his concern and Alaina would have to lead him to her.

Bates waited restlessly outside the door, his thoughts roaming to the servants’ quarters. He’d have to save the wench for another day, but his thoughts remained on Bess’ rounded backside and her bountiful bosom, creating much imaginative meandering in his mind and much frustration in his loins.

A light sleeper, Aunt Cornelia knew the sounds of her house as well as her own breathing. Something was amiss and she knew exactly what to do, for she often mused about how she might confront a burglar if the need arose. The excitement of it seemed more invigorating, than the danger. If she rang for a servant, it would certainly cause a calamity and it might only be one of the girls roaming about.

There was a distinct change in the air and she wasn’t going to wait to find out what caused the change. Finding the set of dueling pistols inherited from her father, she set them on the bed while she retrieved her robe and slippers.

Meanwhile, Martin kneeled over Alaina and gently but firmly covered her mouth with his hand. Her eyes flew open.

He brought his mouth close to her face and whispered as he stared into her fearful eyes. “Shh, do not be afraid, Alaina.
